Dr. Laila Curtis
Dr. Laila is currently a PhD student at Nottingham Vet School carrying out research into
equine colic. The study aims to determine how veterinary surgeons
approach the first assessment of a case of colic, what signs are present
in each case and how it all relates to diagnosis and outcome. Dr. Laila’s
primary role is to liase with veterinary practitioners in order to
support and encourage participation in the colic survey. She is the
first point of contact throughout the process of registration and
participation and should any queries arise. Dr. Laila also keeps the website
updated with colic news, reviews and survey information. The results
of the survey will eventually be presented to a panel of stakeholders to
facilitate the development of a set of evidence-based guidelines on the
‘best practice’ approach to colic. Before starting her PhD, Dr. Laila
graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Equine Science from Hartpury College and
an MSc in Applied Equine Science from the Royal Agricultural College.
Following her studies Dr. Laila was a Lecturer in equine science at Bishop
Burton College in East Yorkshire. She has spent most of her life working
with horses having taught Western riding in the US, groomed for elite
riders (dressage and eventing), set up and run a horseball team and
worked at various equine establishments including a therapy centre,
thoroughbred stud, National Hunt yard and a riding school. Dr. Laila has a
keen interest in riding and particularly horseball.
